What did we reject as a group, and why did we reject it? What did we verify together, and how did we verify it?
The group names collective decisions. If members give different answers, the divergence is data. It surfaces where the group's shared understanding broke down.
Process artefacts as graded components
The group's Evaluation Gate and Verification Slip are submitted as graded components, not optional extras. The trace belongs to the group, not individuals.
We evaluated this together. The slip records what the group decided, not what individuals later recall deciding.
Implementation note: one Verification Slip per group. All group members sign off. If a member cannot explain a decision on the slip, the group's trace becomes the diagnostic, not a failure for the individual alone.
Live variable change Not converted — individual only
This move is retained in the individual version of this resource only. It is not included in the group version.
Reason: the live variable change works because it surfaces the contrast between students who genuinely understand and those who cannot adapt. At group level, one capable member can carry the group response, converting an individual comprehension screen into a free-rider opportunity. The integrity logic breaks down. Teachers running group learning should use the live variable change with individuals within the group separately, then compare. Do not substitute it for the group trace. The group's secure evidence point is one moment, under teacher supervision, where all members must individually articulate the same group decision.
Implementation note
What group completion looks like
The group sits together and completes one trace collectively. This is not individuals doing separate traces then comparing. It is a single group artefact the group owns together.
- If group members disagree on a decision, name the disagreement in the trace. It is data, not failure.
- The group is accountable for the trace. If a member could not explain a group decision later, the trace becomes the diagnostic tool to surface where understanding diverged.
- The live variable change remains an individual move. Run it separately within the group if needed. Do not substitute it for the collective trace.
Group process check-in
Optional diagnostic for teachers
After this group completes their trace, teachers may optionally use the Group Process Check-In to explore: why did this group work successfully? Where did collaboration break down? How can the group do better next time?
This is separate from the trace. It is diagnostics for the teacher, not accountability for the group.
