Even in Year 1, a child can be asked: which of these two ideas do you think is better, and why? That question — asked before any investigation begins — is science thinking. It is also the habit that makes evaluating AI output natural later on.
Before a sorting activity on animals and plants, the teacher shows two sorting rules: "sort by where they live" and "sort by what they eat." Students choose which rule will help them find out more about living things, and say one reason why. The teacher records the group's reasoning before any sorting begins.
Before testing which material is more waterproof, students are shown two predictions: "the plastic bag will keep things dry" and "the paper bag will keep things dry." They name their criterion (which one keeps water out?), choose a prediction, and give one reason. The reason is collected before the test begins. After the test, the teacher asks: did the result match your reason, or did something surprise you?
The gate has four elements: two options, one criterion, one comparison, one justified choice. At Years 1 to 3, these can all be spoken and recorded by the teacher rather than written by students. The gate works because it happens before the investigation, not as a reflection afterwards.
Accept all reasoned choices at this level. A child who chooses the less likely prediction and gives a genuine reason is doing the science thinking the gate is designed to elicit. The criterion is not correctness — it is whether the student is comparing before committing.
