Come and learn about one of our most dangerous faults, why it is where it is, how it relates to the plate boundary, how it has impacted the path of the river and formation of the Hutt Valley, and how planners and engineers have worked to soften the blow when it ruptures one day as it inevitably will!
We will start at Upper Hutt where the trace of the Wellington Fault cuts across the Hutt River and a flight of river terraces, allowing for a mapping exercise to work out the earthquake history. Then we will follow the fault into Lower Hutt to observe different planning responses to the hazard of a potential fault rupture.
